The room, and the reason people choose it

The clubhouse was designed to look outward, and that does a lot of the work for you. Whatever you’re planning, the windows and the deck give you fairways, greens, water and a long horizon behind them.

You don’t have to decorate a view. That matters more than it sounds. It’s the difference between a room you have to work on and a room that already looks like somewhere worth being.

There’s space indoors, fully air conditioned, and space outside on the deck. Most occasions here end up using both, drifting between the two as the afternoon goes on.

What it suits

The café takes a range of private functions, and they’re not all the same kind of day.

• Birthdays. From a long lunch with friends to a milestone with the whole family.
• Family gatherings. Reunions, christenings, anniversaries and the get-togethers in between.
• Corporate dinners. A quiet room, a view, and no city traffic to get out of.
• Club functions. The kind of standing fixture that needs a room that works every time.
• Celebrations. Whatever it is you’re marking.
• Weddings. Ceremonies out on the deck with the course behind, receptions inside when the light goes.

That last one is worth drawing out. A ceremony on the deck and a reception indoors means you’re not moving anybody between venues, and nobody has to drive anywhere in the middle of the day.

The food is cooked here

Catering is done by the Clubhouse Café itself, out of the same kitchen that runs the café every day. It isn’t brought in from somewhere else and it isn’t a different team who turn up for the night.

That’s the same kitchen that Ann & Elizabeth run seven days a week, and the same people who know the regulars by name. Both of them ran restaurants in Sydney for years before this.

Dietary requirements are accommodated when you let them know in advance. The function enquiry form has a field for exactly that, so put it in there and it gets to the kitchen rather than getting lost on the day.

What isn’t on this page, and why

You won’t find a capacity number, a package, a per-head price or a list of inclusions here. That’s deliberate.

Every one of those depends on what you’re actually doing. How many people. Indoors, outdoors, or both. Seated or standing. What time of year. What you want fed.

A published number would either be wrong for your day, or it would quietly rule out something the café would happily have done.

So the honest answer is that it’s a conversation, and it’s a short one. You describe the day, they tell you what works.

What guests have said

The most useful thing about a venue is usually what somebody says after they’ve been to something there. One guest who came to a seventieth put it better than we could:

“We attended a 70th birthday function at the Golf Club. The finger food was excellent, the room was pleasant, the view out over the golf course was excellent, and the staff friendly, helpful and very efficient. Everything was so well done. We would recommend this club to everyone.”

Another wrote, simply: “I went there for a function it was very nice Staff are very friendly.” A third: “Friendly staff, courteous service, lovely venue. Highly reccomend a visit.”

The word that comes up over and over in those is the staff. That’s the part you can’t photograph.

The practical things people ask about

A few details that tend to come up early, all of which are worth knowing before you start planning around them.

• Parking is on site. Your guests park at the clubhouse and walk straight in.
• Getting in is step free. There’s a wheelchair accessible entrance and wheelchair accessible dining areas, which matters at a family occasion where somebody usually needs it.
• It’s licensed. Tap and bottled beer, wine and soft drinks.
• Indoors is air conditioned. So the weather doesn’t decide what kind of day you have.
• Nobody needs to be a member. Your guests don’t need anything to do with the golf club to come.

How to start

That callback is the point. Catering, timings and the shape of a day are worth a real conversation, not a form letter.

Five minutes on the phone will tell you more than any package sheet.

Tell them roughly how many people, roughly when, and what kind of occasion it is. That’s enough to start.

What to tell them when you get in touch

You don’t need a plan worked out. But the more of this you have, the faster the answer comes back.

• Roughly how many people. A range is fine.
• Roughly when. A date, or the month and whether it has to be a weekend.
• What the occasion is. A seventieth and a corporate dinner want different things.
• Indoors, outdoors, or both. If you don’t know, say so. Most days end up as both.
• Anything you want fed. Even loosely: finger food, a sit-down lunch, something in between.
• Dietary requirements. The enquiry form has a field for it, and it reaches the kitchen ahead of the day.

That’s genuinely all. Ann or Elizabeth will take it from there on the phone.

And if your date is still moving, get in touch anyway. It’s easier to talk it through early than to work backwards from a date you’ve already promised everybody.

The kitchen you’re actually booking

It helps to know what the café cooks on an ordinary day, because it’s the same kitchen and the same people.

The daily lunch menu runs a tempura tasting plate, tempura flathead tails, Peking duck spring rolls, an Angus beef burger, a club sandwich and a seafood basket. The tasting plate is fish pieces, prawns and salt and pepper squid. There are wraps and toasted sandwiches too.

Breakfast runs from 8:30 to 11:30am. Coffee, teas and cake from the display cabinet are on all day.

None of that is the function menu, because the function menu depends on your day. But it tells you what the kitchen does seven days a week without being asked, which is a more useful signal than a package sheet.

The café hosts a standing occasion every month

This is worth mentioning. Underneath most function enquiries sits one real question: can the place handle a full room of people who all want feeding at once?

One Tuesday a month the café hosts Ladies with a Cause. It’s a fundraising lunch, run with Harrington Rotary, and it raises money for local families who need a hand.

The room fills, everybody gets lunch, there’s a raffle, and every dollar raised stays in the district.

It’s a regular fixture rather than a one-off, and it runs out of the same kitchen. Details are on the events page.

What happens if the weather turns

It’s the first thing anybody planning something outdoors in Australia wants to know, and the answer here is straightforward. There’s a full indoor space, air conditioned, with the same view through the glass.

So the deck is an option rather than a gamble. You’re not choosing between a good day and a wet one, you’re choosing which part of the building you use, and you can leave that decision very late.

Air conditioning is worth saying out loud for a summer function, too. A room full of people in February is a different proposition with it than without it.

Where it is, and getting your guests there

The clubhouse is at 41 Josephine Boulevard, Harrington NSW 2427, at Harrington Waters Golf Club. There’s parking on site, so nobody is circling a street looking for a space in good clothes.

Getting in is step free. There’s a wheelchair accessible entrance and wheelchair accessible dining areas, which tends to matter at exactly the kind of occasion where the whole family comes, and it’s pram friendly.
