Happy Hour runs from 4 to 5:30pm on the deck, every Friday of the year. There are drinks, there are raffles, and there’s the particular pleasure of watching the light go gold across the water while somebody else worries about the week.

Ninety minutes is about right for it. It’s long enough to settle in and short enough that it doesn’t turn into a commitment.

What it costs

The prices are the reason a lot of people put it in the diary.

• Draught beer, $6.
• House wine, $6.
• Raffles. Drawn during the session.

The clubhouse is licensed, so there’s tap and bottled beer, wine and soft drinks generally. Those two $6 prices are the Happy Hour ones.

Nothing to book, nothing to join

Members, locals and visitors are all welcome. There’s nothing to reserve and nothing to belong to. Turn up at 4pm, order at the bar, find a seat outside.

This surprises people, so it’s worth repeating. You don’t need to be a golf club member. You don’t need to play golf. The café is its own business inside the clubhouse at Harrington Waters Golf Club, and Happy Hour is open to anybody who wants to come.

If you’re new to Harrington, this is genuinely one of the better ways to meet the place. The crowd is a fair cross-section of the town, and it’s a friendly one. Come on your own and you won’t be on your own for long.

Why the deck, specifically

The clubhouse sits up above the fairways and the waterways, and the deck runs along the front of it. At 4pm on a clear Friday the sun is getting low over the water and the whole thing turns gold for about half an hour.

That’s the bit people describe when they tell someone else about it. It isn’t a view you have to go looking for. You sit down and it’s just there in front of you.

If the weather has other ideas, the clubhouse is fully air conditioned inside and the view through the glass holds up.

One thing to know about the timing

Happy Hour sits at the end of the café’s day rather than apart from it. The kitchen serves breakfast, light meals and lunch from 8:30am and closes at 2pm. On Wednesday, Friday and Saturday the bar and café then carry on until 5:30pm.

Happy Hour then runs 4 to 5:30pm on Fridays, with bar snacks alongside the drinks. What you can’t get at that hour is a cooked lunch, because the kitchen has finished. Two different things, both real.

The other thing worth knowing about

Friday isn’t the only fixture. One Tuesday a month the café hosts Ladies with a Cause, a fundraising lunch run with Harrington Rotary that raises money for local families who need a hand.

The room fills with women from around Harrington for lunch, a raffle and a couple of hours of good company, and every dollar raised stays in the district. Proceeds are managed by the Harrington Rotary Club, and the lucky door prizes are donated by the café. Entry is $5 and lucky door tickets are $5.

What the rest of the week looks like

Happy Hour is the Friday fixture, but it helps to see it against the rest of the week, because the café keeps quite different hours from the session.

• Every day, 8:30 to 11:30am. Breakfast.
• Every day, 11:30am to 2pm. Bar snacks, light meals and lunch.
• Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, until 5:30pm. Bar and café open for bar snacks, coffee, cake and drinks, weather permitting.
• Every Friday, 4 to 5:30pm. Happy Hour on the deck.
• One Tuesday a month, from 11:30am. Ladies with a Cause.

So the kitchen finishes at 2pm every day, and on three of those days the bar and café keep going. If you want a cooked lunch, come in the morning or the early afternoon.

If it’s your first time up here

A few things that catch people out, none of them complicated.

You order at the bar. There’s no table service to wait for, so if you take a seat and nothing happens, that’s the reason. The clubhouse is licensed, so there’s tap and bottled beer, wine by the glass or the bottle, and soft drinks in the fridge alongside the $6 Happy Hour prices.

And you really don’t need to know anybody. The café is open to the public and so is Happy Hour. Walk in, order, sit down.

What people say about the place

The thing that comes up most often in what people write about the café isn’t the view, which is the part you’d expect. It’s the staff.

“Love the service and the great coffee and the atmosphere is terific always a great experience,” one regular wrote. Another: “Friendly staff, courteous service, lovely venue. Highly reccomend a visit.” A third, on a quieter note: “Coffee was very good and lovely relaxing surroundings.”

That’s a fair description of a Friday afternoon out there, minus the golden light, which is hard to put in a sentence.

The view, and when it does its thing

The deck runs along the front of the clubhouse, above the fairways and the waterways, with umbrellas and rattan chairs and a white balustrade between you and the drop. Sitting there, you’re looking across the greens to the water and a long horizon behind it.

The light is the part people talk about. Some time in that 90 minutes the sun gets low enough to turn the water and the fairways gold, and the whole deck goes quiet for a bit while it happens.

Exactly when depends on the time of year, the way it does anywhere. In the middle of winter it’s already well underway when you arrive at 4pm. In midsummer it comes later, closer to the end of the session, and the afternoon stays bright the whole way through.

Either way you don’t need to plan around it. Turn up at 4pm and you’ll catch it.

Can I get something to eat?

Yes. Happy Hour serves bar snacks alongside the drinks, and coffee and cake are on as well if that suits you better.

What you can’t get at 4pm is a cooked lunch. The kitchen runs 8:30am to 2pm: breakfast until 11:30, then light meals and lunch until it closes. So a burger or the tempura flathead is the earlier part of the day.

The easy way to have both is to come earlier, have lunch, and let the afternoon roll on into Happy Hour.

Bringing the dog, or the family

Dogs are welcome in the outdoor seating on the deck, and there are fresh water bowls out there for them. You don’t need to ask first.

If the weather turns

The deck is the draw, but it isn’t the only option. The clubhouse is fully air conditioned inside and the view through the glass holds up, so a grey Friday doesn’t cancel anything.

That cuts both ways in summer. When it’s too hot to sit out in the sun at 4pm, there’s somewhere cool to sit that still looks out over the water.

Why people put it in the diary

There are cheaper ways to have a drink and there are quieter ones. What Happy Hour has is a combination that’s genuinely hard to find: a good view, a short walk from home for a lot of Harrington, no booking, and a crowd that talks to you.

The raffles help. They’re drawn during the session, and they give the afternoon a shape, so it isn’t just a room of people looking at their phones.

Mostly, though, it’s the standing nature of it. It’s on every Friday. You don’t have to organise anything or check whether it’s happening. It just is, at 4pm, on the deck.

Getting here

The clubhouse is at 41 Josephine Boulevard, Harrington NSW 2427, with parking on site. You park and walk straight in.

Getting in is step free, with a wheelchair accessible entrance and wheelchair accessible dining areas. Dogs are welcome in the outdoor seating, and there are water bowls for them out on the deck.
